Yes, time flies! INPLANT is running for 4 years already and coming to an end. And so is Elisa's PhD. In December, she successfully defended her PhD entitled "Characterising and understanding grassland ecosystem functioning - from functional to optical traits". Ready for new (scientific) adventures!

Project coordinator Ben Somers presented the final stage of our project on the Belgian Earth Observation Day.
The presentation can be downloaded here: https://eo.belspo.be/en/agenda/belgian-earth-observation-day-2019 New paper out in Methods in Ecology and Evolution.
We developed a standardized method to measure plant traits through hyperspectral remote sensing. Promising for building databases of plant traits based on spectral libraries. https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/2041-210X.13237 You can download the dataset of our paper A novel procedure for measuring functional traits of herbaceous species through field spectroscopy from the EcoSIS spectral library!
The dataset is stored as Individual forb and grass species spectra measured on field patches and on a black table Find it here: https://ecosis.org/#result/00687048-8c2a-4d35-bbc4-88ef02ee71cc Starting from next year, the MaakLeerPlek or STEM-studio will be used as a place for science communication, primarily targeting children and youth between 6 and 18 years old. The studio's motto is to learn by making and experiencing, and therefore intents to be a place where education, work and creativity meet.
In May 2019, the studio (under construction) was officially unveiled to the public. Elisa was invited to present her research in a 7-minute science slam and won the battle. https://www.samenonderwijsmaken.be/agenda/iedereen-meester [webpage of the event, in Dutch] Explain your research to children in 15 minutes, that's the challenge of the "Wetenschapsbattle" or "Battle of the Scientists". Elisa participated in the 5th edition of this exciting initiative, and explained how vegetation interacts with light so that the children were able to help Sherlock in detecting "bullying plants" from space.

(http://is.earsel.org/workshop/11-IS-Brno2019/) Elisa was nominated twice for her presentation on "The optical profile of herbaceous plant functional types"! She received an EARSeL Young Scientist Award (Best oral presentation - 2nd price) and her presentation was ranked second best by the workshop audience. |
